United FC U14 Boys Win “EDP First Division” Title and Climb to #3 Nationally

United FC beat Ironbound 7-0 at their last division game this past Thursday to win the First Division Title.  With this accomplishment, United FC climbed the rankings in GotSoccer to #3 nationally and continues to dominate at the state and regional level.  The coaching staff feels very good about United FC’s development program.  Training by Julian Richens (Head Coach - St. Peters University Div I) and Pancho Corral (South American Soccer Academy) are the main factors which have contributed to develop confident and skillful players who are able to perform in every game with a great style of play.  Success of our program has yield eight players being selected to EDP Talent Identification Program (TIP), another eight United FC players are part of the Cedar Stars Academy Super Y team traveling to Florida next week for the National Championship and another 10 players have been selected by East Coast Selects to compete in Spain for a tournament in Mallorca in Spring 2014 with 5 of those representing USA at the Mediterranean International Cup (MIC) 2014.  The Coaching Staff would like to congratulate this fine group of players who are proudly representing our East Brunswick Soccer Club.

United FC U14 Boys - Baltimore Mania Tournament Champions, Steady At #7

Last week at the Baltimore Mania tournament, United FC went undefeated in the group stage but it was not all that easy as Mooredale Academy from Canada gave United FC a tough physical game which resulted in a tie.  However, United FC’s passing game and intensive offensive strikes prevailed in the end to qualify the team for the final match against DSC Alliance from Maryland.

United FC improved with each game as well as their possession style of play a style for which they are becoming to be known for.  United FC went on to beat DSC Alliance 5-1 to claim the championship.  United FC is trained by Coach Julian Richens and South American Academy Coach Pancho Corral.

EBSC Ravens WIN Women’s u17/18G Division in Monroe Tourney

East Brunswick Ravens played in the Monroe tournament in a tough u17/18 division of girls.  The first game was against a top flighted Hamilton team who gave the Ravens trouble two years ago.  East Brunswick Ravens were down 2-0 in the first half to the top seeded Hamilton team but played a tough half.  The Ravens overcame the deficit to tie the game with seconds left to play.  Going into PK’s the team was confident and excited.  The Ravens won the first game on PK’s 4-2.  In the second game the Ravens played strong and won 3-0 against Bayonne.  The Ravens played solid and worked hard in both games.  Great JOB EBSC RAVENS.

East Brunswick United FC U14B repeats as State Champions by winning the New Jersey Cup 2014

United FC won the NJ State Cup back in 2010 and yesterday they succeeded in bringing the US Club New Jersey Cup 2014 to East Brunswick.  United FC beat BSM Gottschee 2-1 in a tough semifinal and Princeton Black 2-0 in the championship game. This is a tremendous achievement by this group of talented players who are becoming to be known at a regional and international level.

These boys proudly represented East Brunswick in Europe where 12 members of United FC recently traveled to play at Costa Daurada in Barcelona and the number one international youth tournament, Mediterranean International Cup (MIC 2014), winning the tournament at one and the consolation tournament at the other.

The coaching staff is very proud of these boys who continue to develop and keep on being selected to various programs around the region like ODP etc.  United FC’s program is being recognized by top entities like MLS Philadelphia Union and Cedar Stars Academy.

The coaching staff is working closely with all these organizations and EDP / TIP program to pave the educational opportunities for these players.  But its accomplishments like this one that we hope will alert colleges of the talent that East Brunswick is producing.  United FC is currently ranked #1 in the nation as per this achievement.

EBSC Synergy WIN Their U11 Girls Division at the Manalapan Memorial Day Tournament

East Brunswick Synergy played in the annual Manalapan Memorial Day Weekend tournament and went undefeated to claim the championship trophy, the first in the team's history.  The girls were forced to play 11v11 in the tournament when they have played only small sided since forming.  The Synergy relied on a shut-down defense to frustrate their opponents and ball controlling offensive to control the tempo of the games.   In the first game the Synergy started slow but were able break it open in the second half winning the game 4-0.  In the second game, the team played through rain and slick conditions to notch a 2-0 victory.  In the third game, the Synergy were clearly the smaller team but fought through a physical game for a 2-0 win to earn the right to play in the championship game.  In the final game, the Synergy started to show fatigue but fought through it for a 1-0 win to claim the Championship trophy.

Please join the coaches, trainer and manager in congratulating this amazing group of girls.

East Brunswick Gladiators win the Marlboro Mega Blast Tournament

For the second year in a row, the East Brunswick Gladiators have won the Marlboro Mega Blast Tournament, capturing first place in the White Division.  As is always the case, our strength is our depth.  Rotating 18 players, there is no significant drop-off when one comes off the pitch and is replaced by another.  Anchoring the back line were Sanket Jain, Ryan McDonald, Shane McMahon, Bradley Susskind and Ayyan Rahman.  Doing and extraordinary job of controlling the middle of the field were Luca Biagiotti and Jagath Ranaweera, with help from Nick Riggio, and Andrew Oross.  Shutting down the lanes on the wings were Chase Van Dusen, Bobby McCulley, Zach Solomon, and Sebastian Andrade.  Controlling the ball up top and leading the charge were Vincent Huang, Tyler Devaney, John Dallagnese and Drew Van Dusen.  Anchoring the field in goal was Lucas Espada.  Special mention goes to Luca Biagiotti, Andrew Oross and Chase Van Dusen, all of whom fought through injuries and played on like true Gladiators.

United FC U14B - East Brunswick Labor Day Tournament Champions

United FC managed to win their group stage and final games to keep the trophy at home in the U14B Championship flight.  In the qualifying games, United FC played some good possession games which set the stage to defeat Marlboro Galaxy, PDA Jinky and NJ Shore Boca.  In the final game United faced a very determined Marlboro team, however, United’s focus and constant attacks paid off with a score to win the game.  United FC’s defense did not allow any goals during the tournament and the front line netted a total of nine goals.  This championship helped position United FC at the #2 spot in NJ and at #9 in the country. The coaching staff feels the players are developing in the right direction while continuing to prepare for a tough season ahead.

"East Brunswick United FC Players" Shine at Costa Daurada Cup in Barcelona, Spain

Four East Brunswick United FC U13B players were selected for Koolton’s 2000 East Coast Select team and represented USA at the prestigious International Costa Daurada Cup in Barcelona, Spain, this past Easter week.

Preparation matches allowed these players to measure up against "RCD Espanyol Academy" and "UFC CAMBRILS" while providing them with valuable experience. Their Select team beat Ujuzi Soka from Kenya, UFC Cambrils and Escola Valls (two time tournament winner) from Spain to qualify for the semifinal phase. In the semifinal game they beat Lansi UUSIMAA YJ from Finland 5-0 to qualify for the finals. In the final match, although their team dominated in possession and shooting, they could not find the net and paid dearly at a penalty shootout which they lost to UEB SANTES CREUS from Spain.

United FC’s Coaching staff is very proud of these four boys for representing East Brunswick Soccer Club and their country while contributing and being instrumental to the success of this Select team.

Congratulations to the U13 Gladiators

After clinching first place in flight 1 in the fall season of the Mid-New Jersey Soccer League, the U13 Gladiators made the jump to MAPS.  In their first ever MAPS tournament, the Gladiators clinched the championship of the MAPS Spring Challenge Explosion Bracket.

Beating PDA South United 4-0 and MOT Soccer Titans Blue 3-1 on Saturday, the Gladiators clinched first place in their flight and were playing in the finals on Sunday afternoon.  But as the schedule would have it, they would first have to play the New Egypt Bohemians in a game Sunday morning that would be a preview of the finals in the afternoon.

New Egypt exploited the Gladiators aggressiveness by executing well designed off side traps and the Gladiators were called for 17 off sides, killing a myriad of scoring opportunities.  As a result, the Gladiators lost 1-0.  Before facing New Egypt in the afternoon championship game, the coaches worked with the Gladiators on a game plan to break the trap and free the players to score.  Executing almost to perfection, the Gladiators went on to win the championship game 7-2 with only 4 off sides called against them.

As always, the Gladiators strength is its depth and being  able to substitute the boys in and out without missing a beat, one picking up where the other left off.  Although all contributed to the championship a few played above the level of competition.  Ziyu (Vincent) Huang has become a scoring machine.  John Dallagnese has turned his game up a notch and is playing out of his mind.  Ryan McDonald and Sanket Jain have become impenetrable on the back line.  Nick Riggio filled in at keeper and did a fantastic job.  You would never know he wasn’t a true keeper.  He made no mistakes and played a smart game.  Honorable mention to Ayyan Rahman for coming to support his team while he’s recovering from a concussion.

United FC U13B Clinch EDP Division Title and Climb State & National Rankings

United FC U13B beat Upper Makefield PA and clinched EDP’s Division Title for the Fall season.  United FC’s coaching staff is very proud of the accomplishments obtained in the last five months by these young players.

FALL 2010

NJ STATE CHAMPIONS!

Weekend of 10/30-10-31

United FC win U11 NJ State Cup title in thrilling fashion

EBSC’s United FC, the club’s U11 Boys Elite team, won the club’s first state championship in 16 years this past weekend in Wall, beating Wayne in the semifinals, 4-3, before shutting out Aberdeen, 2-0, in the title game.

"This is very exciting and so great for the boys," said Hector Escobar, one of the team’s coaches. "This is a tribute to the boys’ hard work and commitment, as well as to their parents and my fellow coaches. We’ve tried to create a fun environment here that also emphasizes a commitment to excellence."

United FC faced Wayne in the semifinals in a game that proved to be possibly the biggest challenge of the team’s championship run. United FC started very strong in the first half, and within 10 minutes Ivan Loncar sent a through ball to Kevin Escobar, who dribbled it in the 18th and put it past the goalie for a 1-0 lead.  Five minutes later, Ola-Ayo Ogunwale sent a long pass from defense to connect with Michael Pisco, who dribbled past two defenders and the goalie netting the second goal for a 2-0 score.  United FC continued working the whole field and around the 20th minute mark, Ivan again connected with Kevin who skillfully put it over the defender and sent a volley to beat the goalie for a 3-0 lead at the half.  However, this game was far from over as Wayne came back with great intensity, scoring two goals within 10 minutes to make it a 3-2 game.  Wayne started putting the pressure but United FC’s  solid defense led by Ola-Ayo, Jesse Perel, Ryan Brede, and Nas  Zubairu, along with goal keeper Lucas Ribau, held on to the lead.  Around the 16th minute Luca Biagiotti had a breakaway from midfield and into Wayne’s 18th where he was fouled and awarded a penalty kick.  Ivan executed the penalty but Wayne’s athletic goalie blocked it. But the keeper did not account for Ivan’s follow up which found the back of the net for a 4-2 lead.  Wayne came back with even greater force and even though they scored one more time,  hard defensive plays from Ryan McDonald, Ryan Fedosh, Rob Duncan and Kyle Santos kept the 4-3 score unchanged until the final whistle, moving United FC into the final.

United’s final challenge was against Aberdeen Warriors.  United players started moving the ball well but Aberdeen was pumped up with a solid crowd behind them and were challenging every play.  But it was not enough to stop United as Rob from midfield sent a pass to Luca who took it into the 18th and chipped it over the goalie for a 1-0 lead at the 15th minute.  This got United players motivated and the attack on the Aberdeen goal was non-stop from this point on.  Then around the 22nd  minute a combination from Kyle to Michael and Michael to Ivan, resulted in a beautiful one-on-one by Ivan to beat a defender and the goalie for a goal and a 2-0 United FC lead. The second half was all defense with no additional scoringHowever, the East Brunswick supporters’ cheers and dangerous shots from Michael, Kevin and Ryan McDonald on four separate occasions kept Aberdeen at bay until the final whistle which sealed the title for East Brunswick united.

The team is coached by Hector Escobar, Joe Camarota and Rob Duncan and trained by Rider University assistant coach Julian Richens.

Team members include Daniel Shaposhnikov, Jesse Perel, Ola-Ayo Ogunwale, Ryan Fedosh, Kyle Santos, Kevin Escobar, Michael Pisco, Nas Zubairu, Ryan McDonald, Rob Duncan, Ivan Loncar, Luca Biagiotti, Ryan Brede and Lucas Ribau. FALL 2010 FLIGHT WINNERS:

Wildcats:

The East Brunswick Wildcats continued their winning ways this season by posting a record of 8 wins 0 losses and 2 ties to take the Flight One Championship for U12 Girls of the Mid New Jersey Youth Soccer Association. The Wildcats clinched their championship by beating the Union Soccer Club Lady Dragons 1-0 on a goal scored by Samree Mastro and assisted by Katrina DeMary and Gabrielle Blaustein. When the Friday evening match commenced, it was a brisk 37 degrees but as the match proceeded temperatures dipped in to the low 30’s and frost developed on the ball and field making for very slippery conditions for both the players and keepers. The next day the Wildcats had a make-up game against Watchung Hills with the chance to end their season undefeated. Historically Watchung Hills and the Wildcats played some very physical, toughly contested matches with the Wildcats unable to post a victory. Earlier in the season, however, the Wildcats finally broke through on match played at Watchung Hills’ home turf with a 1-0 victory on a goal by Melissa Ciaccio. The Wildcats were hoping for a repeat performance. Unlike the evening before when cold and frost were the concerns, this day a blustery wind would prove challenging against both teams. The Wildcats, however, would not be denied an undefeated season and were victorious by a score of 2-0. The Wildcats outscored their opponents this season by scoring 18 goals and surrendering only 4. The East Brunswick Wildcats are Andrea Apostolescu, Gabrielle Blaustein, Jennifer Brauer, Swathi Chikoti, Melissa Ciaccio, Jessica Cortez, Kaitlin Esposito, Ciara Gaertner, Sara Gilbert, Sydney Greenspan, Blake Merwin-Lew, Samree Mastro, Katrina Nguyen-Demary, Maria Salib and Lizzie Toto. Coach Steven Blaustein and Assistant Coach Chris Ciaccio could not be more proud of the Wildcats!! The Wildcats are trained by Julian Richens, assistant coach at Ryders University for the men’s soccer team, and would like to thank Julian for all his hard work and dedication. Look out JAGS here we come!

United FC:

The EBSC United FC (U11B) clinched their Mid NJ flight One championship with a perfect 10-0-0 record and a goal differential of +38.

Mid NJ Flight One includes, NJ State Cup quarter finalist Piscataway and finalist Aberdeen among other tough squads. However, United FC has demonstrated consistency throughout the season taking it one game at the time and producing goals and great plays at every position. United FC clinched the championship after defeating Piscataway 4-0 at their home field. United still had two games to spare and set themselves on course to finish undefeated with a perfect 10-0-0 record, 44 goals in favor and 6 goals against. The coaching staff feels hard work at training sessions and concentration made this a great Fall season for the whole team.

The EBSC Ravens (U14G) made it three straight Mid-New Jersey flight championships with another outstanding performance, finishing 8-0-2 for the just-completed season. Coached by John Colaiuti and Chris Dix and trained by Karla Schacher, the Ravens outscored their opponents 25-6, thanks to a combination of strong offense, solid midfield and defensive play and first-rate goalkeeping. The girls opened the season with a tie against arch-rivals Monroe and then really stepped it up in flight play. They also won the Wall Tournament championship and finished second in a very tough Spook-a-Rama Tournament.

"That first game against Monroe really set the tone for the season," Coach Colaiuti said. "The girls were not happy with a tie and worked very hard to improve and train as team. Attendance at training and games was excellent, and every one of our players was committed and improved over the course of the season."
Ignite:

The EBSC Ignite (U11G) clinched their MNJYSA flight championship with a thrilling come-from-behind 4-2 victory over the Tewksbury Jaguars on Saturday November 20th.

The Ignite got off to a great start just 25 seconds into the match as Kelly Goodger took a pass off the opening kickoff and carried the ball down the left side and knocked it in from her midfield position. But the momentum would soon shift, and Tewksbury soon tied the game and took a 2-1 lead before the half.

According to head coach Paul Levine, the Ignite stayed calm and confident at halftime.

"I told them to go out and get this game tied up and they looked at me like I was crazy," Levine said. “Midfielder Lori Mohs looked up and said, ’Tie? We’re going to win!’"

The halftime pep talk fired up the team, and the Ignite came out determined in the second half. First Carly Geletei got the tying goal on a nice right to left pass from Naden Khalil approximately 5 minutes in. Just 3 minutes later, Carly powered home another one on an errant punt from the opposing goalkeeper to put Ignite up 3-2. Anna Curreri rounded out the scoring on her first goal of the season to provide an all-important two-goal cushion. The team then came together to maintain possession for most of the remaining 10 minutes and kept the ball in the attack zone with good communication and solid passes. Strong contributions were made by Emma Weiden, Krystin Goodman, Amanda Wyckoff and Andrea Chandler on defense. Allysa Levine minded the net and kept the lead intact with a fantastic save on a late second half breakaway as she came out, challenged and swiped the ball away from a Tewksbury attacker. Meagan Weiden and Carly Tannura created opportunities all day at the forward position and Nicole Markovich played a great game crossing the ball in over and over from right midfield.

Amanda Lustig and Jessica Saccenti had prior commitments but played an important role all season long in the team’s success with 5 and 2 goals, respectively.

Ignite went on to complete an undefeated season by adding a 2-1 victory Sunday against Woodbridge, ending with an 8-0-2 record.

Assisting Levine are coaches Joe Geletei and Dianne Saccenti. The Ignite is trained by former Rutgers University standout Alicia Hall.

United FC beats Piscataway Strikers 1-0 and advance to NJ State Cup Semifinal!!

Last Saturday United FC played against Piscataway Strikers in the NJ State Cup quarterfinals. It was difficult match with strong defensive and creative plays from both sides.  With 10 minutes before the half time break, United was able to put a long pass into the 18th which the Piscataway goalie miscalculated and Kevin Escobar headed into the goal for a 1-0 lead.  The game continued into the second half with both teams playing  very strong defense.  United FC defense led by Ivan Loncar, Ola-Ayo Ogunwale, Luca Biagiotti, Robert Duncan and Nas Zubairu  helped to maintain the lead and give United FC the win to advance to the semis.

United FC will play the semifinal game this Saturday October 30, 3pm at Wall Municipal Complex in Wall Township. The kids would love the support from anybody from East Brunswick that can make it.

Championship game is scheduled for Sunday October 31st , 9:15 am at Wall Municipal Complex as well.

U8 Girls Shine at Manalapan Funfest
EBSC’s U8 Girls Rec Division sent three teams -- the EB Pink Galaxy, the EB Crazylegs and the EB Black Bears -- to the Manalapan Funfest on October 16, and the teams’ 29 girls had a great time and displayed some first-rate soccer.

With just two other teams entered in the age division, both from Twin County Soccer out of Brick, NJ, that meant that two EBSC teams had to face each other. The Black Bears and Pink Galaxy each played against the Twin County Thunder, beating them 5-0 and 7-1, respectively. The Black Bears and Crazylegs each played the Twin County Riptide, with both games ending in draws. The Pink Galaxy and Crazylegs faced off against one another, in possibly the hardest fought game of the division, which ended up as a 2-1 Pink Galaxy victory.

EB Pink Galaxy team members included Jordan Baker, Alyssa Caroselli, Rebecca Grunin, Lauren Hannan, Hannah Junn, Mansi Kumar, Ava Robertson, Hailey Schaffer, Sarjani Shah and Emma Simpson. Robb Schaffer served as head coach, assisted by Glenn Robertson and Brian Simpson.

United FC sweeps bracket and becomes finalist at YMS Columbus Cup Tournament

Last weekend United FC competed in the YMS Columbus Cup Tournament championship bracket.  United was in for a tough challenge facing the home team UMNSC Patriots from PA in the first game.  This was an intense match against a top quality team which they demonstrated  by leading the game 2-0 at half time.  However, during the half time break, United FC came together as a team and motivated went into the second half determined to leave everything on the field.  The efforts paid off as the midfield line led by Ivan Loncar won a ball and placed a pinpoint pass to Kevin Escobar for a goal making it 2-1 within 10 minutes.  As United gained confidence combined with a tough defense led by Ola-Ayo Ogunwale, Kevin was assisted for another score making it 2-2 by the 20th minute mark.  As expected, the game was full of hard tackles, accurate passes and brilliant individual plays culminating in a corner kick taken by Kyle Santos connecting with Kevin who with a side volley netted the winner for a 3-2 final score.  The first game set the pace for the other games as United went on to beat the Pleasant Valley Cobras NY 5-0 and FSA United CT 2-0  to sweep the bracket and qualify for the final.  Injuries and exhaustion played a role in diminishing United’s performance in the final game against PDA Rooney.  However, United went down fighting.  Eight minutes into the first half, a scramble on the penalty box created by United’s offense resulted in a 1-0 lead until PDA scored from a free kick with a minute before the end of the first half to make it 1-1.  The second half was just as exciting with plays from both sides, but injuries again began to take a toll on the team.  The game went into overtime, with PDA finally finding the net to overcome a tough United side.  United FC’s coaching staff congratulates these 14 East Brunswick players for a magnificent performance and great sportsmanship.

EBSC Dynamo Claim Parsippany Tournament Championship

The EBSC Dynamo (U12 Premier) displayed some of their finest all-around soccer to date en route to the championship at the recent Parsippany Tournament. The boys won three of four games, including a thrilling finale.

The Dynamo started strong with a 3-2 win over Fort Lee. Henry started things with a goal, but Fort Lee bounced back with two goals to take a 2-1 halftime lead. In the second half, Amani placed a perfect ball right in front of the goal as Jason put a header in the net, tying the score 2-2. Shortly after, Stelly demonstrated a long throw-in, setting up Jason’s game-winning goal.

In the second game, the Dynamo faced a tough Wayne squad. The team went up 1-0 on a PK from Jason. Wayne tied the score, but another Jason goal put the team up 2-1. Pat pounded a free kick into the goal as the Wayne goalie could not handle it. For an encore, Pat put a nifty "no-look" shot into the net to put the team up 4-1 at the half. But Wayne played inspired soccer in the second half and came back with three unanswered goals to pull out a 4-4 tie.

Coaches Gary, Gumy and Pat found the right combination of strategy and motivation to lead the boys into the second day of play. Because the team tied the second game, the third game vs. North Hunterdon became a must-win in order to give the Dynamo a chance at the finals.

North Hunterdon got off to a quick start and took a 1-0 lead, but a Stelly throw-in set up Henry, who found the goal as he has all season. Amani then beat the opponents’ defense and took the ball all the way in and scored to put the team up 2-1. Stelly put a long hard shot on goal and Henry put the rebound in the net to put the Dynamo up 3-1. Henry then put a ball in front of the goal from deep in the corner and Jason beat the goalie for a 4-1 lead. Jason then secured the 5-1 victory with his second PK of the weekend.

The championship game paired the Dynamo with the Wyckoff Torpedoes, which was undefeated over the weekend and for the season. On a corner kick, Henry passed the ball back to Benny, who was on defense. Benny let loose a high, hard shot from about 30 yds, over the goalie’s head and into the upper corner. Moments later, though, Wyckoff managed to tie the score within a minute and the half ended 1-1. Stelly found Jason on a throw-in, who passed the ball to Henry who put it in the goal. Wyckoff soon tied, setting up a possible overtime. But Henry came through with the game and tournament winner just minutes before the end of regulation time, scoring off a rebound to give the Dynamo a 3-2 victory.

The Dynamo displayed a great team effort in the tournament, with strong goal scoring and solid midfield, defensive and goalkeeping play from Sahil, Matt T, Flynn, Chewy, Brandon, Farrell, Matt P, John, and Andrew.

Team members include Amani Alexander, John Bognar, Ryan Farrell, Ryan Flynn, Jason Levine, Henry Mills-Lutterodt, Matt Mischler, Sahil Patel, Matt Pietrzyk, Patrick Pinho, Benny Rosen, Ryan Stelicos, Matthew Taffet, Brandon Withum, and Andrew Yager.  The coaches are Gary Taffet, Gumy Pinho and Pat Farrell.  The team is trained by Gerald Bustamante.

SPRING 2010

Weekend of 6/19-6/20

East Brunswick Wildcats Win Hershey Invitational
After a successful second-place finish in the Manalapan Invitational Tournament this past Memorial Day Weekend expectations were high as the EBSC Wildcats (U11G) headed to Hershey, PA, for a Father’s Day Weekend tournament.

The Wildcats opened up with a 2-0 victory over Falls Church 98 United and, just two hours later, followed up with a 3-0 victory over the Denville Fusion to move them into a Sunday semifinal against the host Hershey Wildcats. Playing inside a converted airplane hanger, EBSC topped Hershey, 2-0, to set the stage for a final showdown against Monmouth Coast Angel Fish. The final match began with a World Cup-style introduction of the players, who ceremoniously walked up the center line around the circle and then faced their parents and waved. Then it was time to get down to business. The match was evenly played until the 24th minute of the first half when the Wildcats were awarded a penalty kick. Andrea Apostolescu took the kick but hit the crossbar. Instinct took over and with the ball bouncing straight back at Andrea she dove out of the way and Melissa Ciaccio, waiting right behind her, drilled the ball by a shocked keeper for a 1-0 lead.  The Wildcats held off the Angel Fish and had several opportunities of their own to increase their lead, with the game ending with a thrilling 1-0 Wildcat victory.

The tournament victory capped a great season for the Wildcats, who went undefeated to take the Flight 2 Mid New Jersey championship this past Fall, placed second in the Manalapan tournament and went undefeated and unscored-upon to claim the Hershey championship.

The East Brunswick Wildcats are Andrea Apostolescu, Gabrielle Blaustein, Jennifer Brauer, Swathi Chikoti, Melissa Ciaccio, Jessica Cortez, Kaitlin Esposito, Ciara Gaertner, Sara Gilbert, Sydney Greenspan, Blake Merwin-Lew, Samir Mastro, Katrina Nguyen-Demary, Maria Salib and Lizzie Toto. Also contributing to the championship in Hershey was guest player Tsion Mastro. The team is coached by Steven Blaustein and Chris Ciaccio and trained by Kristie Lang.

Dynamo Wins Hershey Invitational

Not even the sweltering heat could take away the smiles on the faces of the team and the fans on Sunday when the EBSC Dynamo (U11B) took the Hershey Invitational Tournament championship by beating Toms River, 3-0. This was the team’s second tournament victory this season.

The first game in the tournament was against Parsippany. The passing was sharp as the boys played aggressively and came away with a 4-1 victory. In the second game a few hours later, the Dynamo had a near-perfect performance with a victory over Chantilly, VA, 6-0.

After learning that they had earned a bye into the championship game, the team and their families enjoyed a barbecue, Hershey Park, and other activities later that day.

In the finale, the Dynamo came out strong with tight teamwork and went up 3-0 by halftime. The second half was a defensive battle, culminating in a beautiful PK save by Chewy. The Dynamo outscored their opponents, 13-1, for the tournament. Amani, Sahil, Brandon and Chewy all received game honors. But this was the most complete team effort of the season, as  everyone played a critical role.

Leading the way at Hershey were Amani Alexander, Andrew Yager, Benny Rosen, Brandon Withum, Jason Levine, Matt Mischler, Matt Pietrzyk, Matt Taffet, Patrick Pinho, Ryan Farrell, Ryan Flynn, Ryan Stelicos and Sahil Patel. The team was coached by Gary Taffet and Gumy Pinho. Also congratulations to Gabriel Charney, Connor Torrelio, John Bognar and Coach Jason Charney, who also were key in the team’s very successful season but were not at the Hershey tournament.

Blazers repeat as Mid-New Jersey champions
The EBSC Blazers (U13B) made it back-to-back overall division championships in Mid-New Jersey with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Hunterdon Gunners last Saturday at Heavenly Farms. The Blazers, cheered on by a big pro-EBSC crowd, overcame a 1-0 deficit and the 90 degree heat to defend their division championship.

In the first half of the game, the Blazers seemed to be in control but gave up a nice goal to Hunterdon’s striker just 15 minutes into the game.

Keeping their cool, the Blazers were able to manage a comeback to even the score at the 30-minute mark off a direct kick. Josh Barkoff lofted a great ball into the box, and Matt Siegel’s shot was turned aside by the Hunterdon keeper. But Kevin Walsh was in the right place to pounce on the rebound and tie the score.

Early in the second half, Brandon Enny received a long pass from the Blazers midfield and darted for Hunterdon’s net. As he approached the goal, he was fouled and was awarded a penalty kick. Brandon made no mistake, blasting the PK into the upper ninety for what turned out to be the game-winning goal.

Both teams had great chances in the second half, but the Blazers’ defense tightened up and kept the Hunterdon attack at bay.

"I couldn’t be any more proud of our team" said head coach Steve Morgen, who is assisted by Lou Serra and Alan Nadler and trainer Jim Buchanan of Maestro Soccer Academy. "The Blazers are a great bunch of kids and they are out there having fun and doing what they do best. They play as a team and they have learned how to win together."

Decked out in their Mid-New Jersey championship T-shirts are the Blazers, pictured from left to right: (top row) Coach Alan Nadler, Brandon Enny, Kyle Knotts, Josh Barkoff, Evan Kleiner, Coach Lou Serra, Alex Gomez, Adam Rosa, Ryan Joshphson, Derek Morgen, Coach Steve Morgen and David Nadler; (bottom row) Noah Levine, Matt Siegel, James Fiocco, Kevin Walsh, Dylan Serra and Brian Amriddinov.

U13 BLAZERS WIN FLIGHT 1

The EBSC Blazers (U13B) won Mid-New Jersey’s flight 1 championship with a thrilling 2-1 victory last Sunday against the Hopewell Valley Surge, a team that had previously beaten the Blazers 3-1 earlier in the year.

The Blazers fell behind 1-0 in the first half but came out with an explosive start to the second half. Three minutes into the second half, the Blazers capitalized on a corner kick to tie the game, 1-1, and five minutes later they scored again to take a 2-1 lead  The Blazers’ team defense took over after that, holding Hopewell Valley off the scoring sheet the rest of the way.

The win on Sunday not only gives the Blazers the top seed in the U13 division but it also gives them the opportunity to cap off consecutive all-flight championships in front of a home crowd. A year ago at U12, the Blazers won a thrilling shootout in the championship game to become the overall U12 winners.

Members of the Blazers are Brian Amriddinov, Josh Barkoff, Brandon Enny, James Fiocco, Alex Gomez, Ryan Josephson, Evan Kleiner, Kyle Knotts, Noah Levine, Derek Morgen, David Nadler, Adam Rosa, Dylan Serra, Matt Siegel and Kevin Walsh. The team is coached by Steve Morgen, Lou Serra and Alan Nadler and trained by Jim Buchanan of The Maestro Soccer Academy.

Weekend of 4/25-4/26

EB Ignite: The Ignite played their strongest game of the year this past wet and chilly Sunday afternoon against the Berkeley Heights Blue Fire. Anna C., Amanda L., and Kelly G. lead the team with extremely strong efforts this weekend. They controlled the defensive side of the ball and stopped the opponents attack. The game’s lone goal was scored by Kelly G., on a pass from Carly G., at about the 10 minute mark of the game. Kelly had just taken the corner kick and Carly returned her the ball which was struck into an open spot on the net. Tsion M. repeatedly made strong passes that just missed getting connected on. Carly T, Naden K. and Meagan W. played very well in the mid and forward rotation. Maria M. played a very tough mid as well. Amanda W. was her usual self playing good defense as well as helping out at the mid spot. We had numerous runs down both sides and attacking through the middle and just missed increasing the lead several times. Our goalie play was strong in both halves led by Tsion and Carly G, who made a brilliant last second save to secure the victory. The team came together despite missing three tough players, Emma W. out with a broken arm (season), Allysa L. out with a bum knee and Jessica S. missing due to a commitment. The Ignite look forward to the return of their missing teammates this weekend.

This was by far the best these girls have played this season and they look forward to continuing to do so this weekend vs. West Orange in EB 5/1, and at Watchung Hills on 5/2. The Ignite are currently 1-2-1.

Weekend of 5/15-5/16

Galaxy fall in double OT in state finals

The EBSC Galaxy (U14B) made a stunning run in the US Club state championship tournament, upsetting the state’s No. 1 team, Montclair Gauchos, before falling, 3-2, on a golden goal PK with just seconds remaining in the championship game to FC Copa.

In the semifinals, the Galaxy, NJ’s No. 12 team, withstood an early charge by Montclair, the nation’s No. 6 team, and countered with two first-half goals. The Galaxy’s keeper made a great save on a Montclair PK early in the second half to keep the Galaxy in control. After Montclair narrowed the Galaxy lead to 2-1, EBSC responded with a brilliant goal on a direct kick to ice an exciting 3-1 victory.

Riding the high of that stunning semifinal win, the Galaxy fell behind FC Copa, the state’s No. 3 team, 1-0, early in the first half but tied the score on a set piece. Even though the Galaxy dominated play throughout the second half, FC Copa took a 2-1 lead late in the half and, with seconds remaining in regulation time, the Galaxy pulled up 10 players and scored off a scramble in front with just seconds to go, sending the championship game into overtime. With very little time to go in the second overtime, an FC Copa forward broke free and was pulled down near the penalty area. After consulting with his assistant referee, the referee ruled the infraction inside the box and awarded a PK, which FC Copa’s forward placed perfectly into the upper 90 for the championship goal.

"It was a great run and the boys played tremendously throughout," said Galaxy team manager Alan Pavelchak. "We’re so proud of the boys for their great play and their winning attitude."

Team members include Matt Anderson, Kyle Ballinger, Dom Bohorquez, Kevin Casari, Thomas Dorsay, Joey Gudzak, Alex Hwang, Corey Klaskin, Michael Mischler, Aram Monokian, Sean Mulhollem, Sam Pavelchak, Anik Ray, Teryn Reed, Matt Skinner, Jesse Stabinsky, Alex Stelicos and Raphael Zonis.

The team is coached by Julian Richens, assistant coach at Rider University.

Week Ending 4/17-4/18

EB Cosmos, off to great start, win Monroe Tournament

The EBSC Cosmos (U11B) are off to a strong start, going undefeated in their first 4 games and winning their first tournament this past weekend in Monroe. The Cosmos have come together both offensively and defensively, showing great teamwork and heart in all of their victories to date.

The team is led by field players Albert Syla, Matteo Tarella, Taylan Ozan, Gregory Gordon, Sam Kleinberg, Anthony Ayoub, Nicholas Cetta, Benjamin Pergament, Joel Reider Ryan Rosales, Arnav Seelam, Jordan Vaspoli, Brian Wilhelm, Matt Schffer and Jonathan King, with Zachary Temin in goal. The team is coached by Andy Syla, Ira Temin and Larry Reiter and trained by John Santos.

Dynamo stuns Cranford with comeback win
The EBSC Dynamo (U11B) pulled off one of its biggest victories to date, coming back from a 2-0 deficit in the second half to stun Cranford, 4-2.

Down 2-0, the Dynamo got a big lift when Patrick, playing very scrappy, scored on an assist from Jason. Then a couple of minutes later, Ryan F, running with great intensity, pounded in the tying goal. Moments later, Benny crossed the ball in front of the goal, where it ricocheted off Pat and ended up on Matt P’s foot and then promptly into the goal. With time running down, Sahil put the nail in the coffin, scoring the fourth and final goal.

Also contributing to the big victory were Chewy at goal, defenders Matt T, Brandon and John, and midfielders and forwards Connor, Andrew, Stelly and Amani. Gabriel missed the game due to illness but has been an important contributor all season.

Week Ending 4/11/10:

Strong team effort by Team Finland
Team Finland played its third close game of the season on Saturday. With leading scorer Marissa K sidelined in the first quarter, the team looked to Morgan K, wearing the captain armband, to provide veteran leadership and strong play up front. Joining her on the offensive side was Jolie H, who has been coming on strong lately and who managed several breakaways. Newcomer Valerie M provided another solid performance in goal, extending her season long shutout streak to 4 quarters. The defense received strong play by first-year and rising star Sammi G and was anchored by defensive ace Lucy M. Strong play in the midfield was led by Gabby L and Charlie S, whose ball-hawking style kept the opposing offense off their game. The team received a boost when leading scorer, Marissa K returned later in the game. But victory was not to be had by team Finland, as last-minute breakaways by the dynamic duo of sisters Morgan K and Marissa K were not enough to get past the excellent play of the opposition’s goalie, who had 5 stops in the last quarter.  The Frozen Gatorade award, which goes each week to the player who plays the hardest, went to Marissa L, who played very well in midfield and on defense.

EBSC Galaxy get it in gear.
After getting off to a slow start this spring the Galaxy began to gel this
weekend, winning a key league showdown on Saturday and coming through with a big State Cup win on Sunday.

Taking on a strong Mt Olive Thunder team on Saturday the Galaxy prevailed,
3-2, in an evenly played, back-and-forth battle.

The Galaxy dodged a bullet in the opening seconds when the Thunder opened the game with a fast run down the left
and blasted a shot off the near post, then a rebound was put back and cleared
off the line by the defense. With the wind at their back, the Galaxy battled back and went ahead 1-0 when a
ball was played from the end line into the goal mouth. The keeper could not
field the high bouncer and it found its way across the line. Another scare came
late in the half when a trip in the box gave the Thunder a PK, but the shot was
again off the post. The Galaxy went up 2-0 early in the second half, before the Thunder battled back
to tie it 2-2. Then late in the game a penalty was called against the Thunder
just outside the box. The first player ran over the ball without kicking it,
causing the wall to break down, and the kick was blasted low and hard to the far
post for the game-winner.

The next day, Galaxy traveled to Brick to take on the state’s No. 8-ranked team, the Twin
County Titans, in the opening round of the State Cup and came away with a 2-0 victory.

After a scoreless first half, a Galaxy forward got the ball in
a good spot and got off a hard shot which resulted in a hand ball just outside
the box. Again the run-over "dummy" by the first player broke down the wall and
the second player shot hard into the right side for a 1 -0 lead.  The Titans
poured it on and committed more resources forward, but the Galaxy D was up to
the challenge and turned away each run. A quick counter attack created a
Galaxy breakaway and the forward slotted the ball to the left of the keeper for
a two-goal lead. The Titans had a breakaway later in the second half, but the
charging keeper forced the shooter just wide of the post.

The Galaxy will now face #6-ranked Den of Lions Samba in the quarterfinal round of the
State Cup.

Big win for Team Fiji
Team Fiji (U10B Rec) had an impressive win this past weekend against a good, determined Team Italy team. Team Fiji got off to a good early start, as Sayom scored the team’s first goal of the day. Evan W and Raymond increased the tally to 3-0 before Italy struck back with a goal. Team Italy made a lot of forays into the Fijian half, but a strong, tireless defensive display by Evan B and some fantastic saves by goalkeeper Justin helped Team Fiji go to halftime with the lead. In the second half, Evan W scored four more, showing a combination of good ball control and shooting ability and Daniel added another to increase the lead further. Joseph, Daniel and Manav played solid defense during the entire half to deny the opponents any more goals. They were well supported by Srisurya, Renesh, and Ryan, who fell back in time from their midfield and offensive positions to regain the possession and build counter-attacks.  Sayom, Raymond, Ryan, Evan W, and Justin kept up relentless pressure on Team Italy’s goal throughout the second half which resulted in the big win. Team Italy’s goalkeeper played an excellent game, as did the rest of Team Italy, who played hard and kept the match full of attacks and counter attacks.

Spirit excels at tournament
The EBSC Spirit (U13G) opened the season by advancing all the way to the semifinals of the PDA Spring Kickoff this past weekend. The team finished second in their bracket with a 2-0 win over Washington United, a 2-2 draw with tournament champion CFC Arsenal from Connecticut and a hard-fought 1-0 loss to Torpedo’s Red from Wyckoff.

Goal scorers were Gabriella Merse on a direct kick from 20+ yards, Barbara Garretson assisted by Katherine McCulley, and Julia Simoes and Meghan McGurl with unassisted goals. Shannan McCarthy had an excellent weekend in goal, including a diving stop on a penalty kick in the first match.

Sydney Rosa, Gabrielle Sachs, Margeret Lee, Alex Kalafor, Carly Torrado, Goldy Ianosi, Kaitlyn Roughan, Stephanie Schwailik, Brittany Lutz and Jamie Delany all made major contributions to the successful tournament weekend.

EBSC United (U12B)) won their flight with a 3-2 win over Long Valley Fire. EB United trailed Long Valley Fire in second place due to one loss against them in the first leg of the season, so the rematch was a true test of the boys’ mental and physical endurance. EBSC mixed short-passing combinations with long diagonal passes to create a number of excellent scoring opportunities, while Long Valley was held to fewer than six shots on goal. EB United will likely move on to flight 1 in the Spring 2010 season with Yoni Auerbach, Chris Cap, Robert Ciuraru, George Eskander, Joey Fawzy, Mohamed Fquihi, Pat Hartman, Brendan Hills, Russel Kevin, Dennis Kotenko, Marco Loncar, Alex Mora, Phil Ogalo, Philip Ripp, Luke Roche, and Matt Ross. EB United are coached by Kevin Roche and Serge Loncar and trained by Julian Richens.

SPRING 2009
Week Ending 05/17/09:
The EBSC Galaxy (U13B) mounted a frantic comeback in the final 15 minutes of their US Cup state semifinal game this past Saturday but fell just short, losing 3-2 to the eventual state champion Highland Jaguars in a thrilling game at Mercer County Park.

The Galaxy started out strong, controlling possession for the first 15 or 20 minutes but not getting any good opportunities. Then the Jaguars’ speed advantage began to show as they were able to chase down a long ball in the corner and create their first goal. A short while later the Galaxy were whistled for a trip in the penalty area, and a PK was awarded. EB’s keeper guessed right while the ball went to his left for the second goal. Late in the first half a Jaguar run to the goal line and service into the box was slotted inside the near post for a 3-0 halftime lead.
The second half was an entirely different story. While the Jaguars came out in the second half looking content with a 3-goal lead, the Galaxy were not done playing. They pressed forward in waves, creating numerous chances but the Jaguar D held. With less than 15 minutes to play, the Galaxy won a free kick from 25 yards. The kick was blasted into the top right corner to make it 3-1.  The momentum shifted immediately and the energized Galaxy attacked at a frantic pace.  With 5 minutes to play a cross was headed in to make it 3-2.  The Galaxy were now committing nearly everyone forward, and the team’s keeper was forced to run almost to midfield to defend one ball.  As the clock wound down a final opportunity came from close in, as the ball was played across the goal and a diving Galaxy player just missed getting a head on the ball.
The Galaxy bounced back the next day, winning convincingly, 3-0, in a MAPS game in Livingston.
The EBSC Gladiators (U9B) played three games this past weekend, coming immediately on the heels of two hard days of tryouts.   Saturday was spent in East Windsor at their Summer Blast Off tournament, where the Gladiators were initially unable to adjust their style to the long, wet grass, and began the day with a disappointing loss to the Scotch Plains-Fanwoods Storm.  Committing themselves to playing error-free ball after that, they took the lead early in their second match against Toms River Juventus (an undefeated team flighted higher in MOSA), and held them off the rest of the way for the 1-0 victory.   On Sunday, the Gladiators hosted the Sayreville Eagles in league play at Dideriksen.   Continuing where they left off on the previous day, the home side shut down the opposing forwards and made their own chances on counter-attacks.    After a scoreless first half, the East Brunswick side notched a goal in the opening minutes of the second half, then held out against a continuous assault by Sayreville for the rest of the match.   Bending, but not breaking, the Gladiators secured another 1-0 victory, giving them 4 wins in 5 games over the last two weekends, and a much-needed break until after Memorial Day.
Week Ending 05/10/09:
The EBSC Galaxy (U13B) may be just two wins away from a state  NJ Cup championship, but they’re taking things a game at a time. The first game is Saturday at 12 noon against Highland Jaguars the state’s No. 11-ranked team, at Mercer County Park’s field #6. The Galaxy, who defeated New Egypt, Livingston and Ironbound in previous US Cup games to reach the state semifinals, and Highlands played to a 1-1 draw last month in a MAPS showdown.  If the Galaxy win, they will advance to the state championship game against either Mount Olive or SC Vistula, who are playing in the other semifinal. The championship game will be played at 4:30 on Saturday at the park’s field #4.  This past weekend, the Galaxy tuned up for their state championship run with a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Bridgewater Arsenal. The Galaxy took advantage of a strong wind at their backs to dominate possession in the first half, creating several opportunities until they cashed in with a short- range goal about 30 minutes in. The tables were turned in the second half, though, as the Galaxy withstood Bridgewater’s attack and yielded just the tying goal. The Galaxy began to assert themselves again about midway through the half and controlled play the rest of the way, winning several dangerous free kicks.  The Galaxy are coached by Al Pavelchak and John Santos and trained by Julian Richens.   Go Galaxy!
Week Ending 05/03/09:
The EBSC Spirit (U12G) took the field with just 11 players in a steady rain last Sunday afternoon for a key JAGS matchup at West Windsor and came away with an impressive 3-0 victory. Stephanie Schwailik had 2 goals and 1 assist, while Gab Sachs added a goal and Katherine McCulley and Kaitlyn Roughan each had an assist. The Spirit also got great play up front from Carly Torrado and in midfield from Sydney Rosa. Margaret Lee, Goldy Ianosi, Emily Chimento and Barbara Garretson held a steady backline and started the attack for the Spirit. Keeper Shannon McCarthy recorded her third shutout of the season.
Galaxy advance to state semifinals:    The EBSC Galaxy (U13B) enjoyed quite a weekend, hanging on for a 0-0 tie with NJ’s 9th-ranked team, FC Premier, in MAPS play on Saturday before a dramatic 3-1 road victory on Sunday over the Ironbound Vipers to advance to the NJ Cup state semifinals.   Against FC Premier, the Galaxy got off to a slow start and played the majority of the game in their own half. Unable to string together passes and maintain possession, the boys were forced to rely on strong play from the back four and their keeper to keep their opponents off the board. The FC Premier defense played very high and won numerous offside calls. The Galaxy did manage a few breakaways against the run of play but could not convert, with the game ending tied.    The next evening, the Galaxy traveled to the less-than-friendly environs of Ironbound Stadium in Newark for a 7 p.m. start time under rainy skies. The Galaxy jumped out to an early one-goal lead with a free kick just 3 minutes in. From about 35 yards out a nice service into the box was volleyed on net, and the keeper was unable to field the wet ball. The Vipers battled back to tie it with a one-man run and blast from the left side. The wet ball slipped thru the keeper and was cleared off the line by the D, but the goal had been called.   Late in the first half a nice Galaxy combo out of the defensive end resulted in a long run to the left side of the box, and a sliding service into the areas was deflected by the keeper before being finished off to go up 2-1.    In the second half a quick reversal of play resulted in an undefended breakaway goal for the Galaxy.    The boys now move on to the NJ Cup semis against the 11th-ranked Highland Jaguars on Saturday, May 16 at Mercer County Park with a noon kick-off.
Week Ending 04/26/09:
The EBSC Panthers (U13G) continued their dominating play with big wins over the Bloomfield Amazons and the Berkely Heights Blus Mist to improve their flight-leading record to a perfect 5-0.  At home against Bloomfield, Jessica McDonald and Stephanie Pasewaldt scored hat tricks and Lianne Escobar and Kaitlin Vanbenthuysen scored a goal each to lead the offensive attack. The Panthers also dominated play in midfield, led by the strong play of Danielle Shaw.

In this past weekend’s win over Berkeley Heights, the defense did the job, led by Alyssa Elman in goal and  Jen Lynk, Rebecca Simpson and Caitlin Mosier on the back line.
Week Ending 04/19/09:
The EBSC Spirit (U12G) stayed sharp with a 2-1 win over BSA Force this past weekend, extending the team’s season-opening winning streak to four games. Stephanie Schwailik found the back of the net on a cross from Katherine McCulley for a 1-0 halftime lead. After BSA evened the score 20 minutes into the second half, Sydney Rosa took a pass from Gab Sachs and put the ball in the net just over the goalie’s reach for the game winner. Barbara Garretson, in her first start in goal, was outstanding.
Week Ending 04/05/09:
The EBSC Panthers (U13G) continued their winning ways this past weekend, coming from behind for an exciting 2-1 road victory over Cranford to improve to 3-0. The Panthers fell behind just two minutes into the game but soon bounced back to take control of the game. The defense also tightened up, with Alana Yates leading the Panther backline. Following a motivational speech at halftime by the team’s coaching staff, the Panthers started out the second half on the attack. The good play paid off when several pinpoint passes created a great scoring chance for Kaitlin Van Benthuysen, who buried a shot from about 20 yards to tie the game at 1-1. The Panthers kept the pressure on and, with about 10 minutes remaining, a shot and ensuing scramble led to a head ball goal by Lianne Escobar to seal the thrilling victory for EBSC.
Week Ending 03/22/09:
The EBSC Panthers (U13G) started the season after weeks of solid training and with a winning attitude and the result has been a 2-0 record.  The Panthers trained hard during the winter and earned their first win of the season on the road against South Brunswick, 4-1.  This past weekend, they faced Westfield’s Crytal Palace on the road again and avenged last season’s last-minute loss with an impressive 5-0 victory. The Panthers kept the pressure on from the initial whistle and maintained the ball on their half for most of the game. The team’s forwards kept breaking down Westfields’s defense and made it 2-0 at halftime.  With an extraordinary performance from the Panther defense, EBSC’s midfielders and forwards exploded for three second-half goals en route to the shutout victory.
The EBSC Galaxy (U13B) combined ball possession with stifling defense last weekend to stop New Egypt, 1-0, on the road and improve to 3-0 in MAPS play.    The Galaxy, with the wind at their backs in the first half, dominated possession, out-shooting the opponents, 10-0. The only goal of the game came on a free kick from just outside the box 15 minutes into the half.  In the second half the Galaxy played into the wind, and the play was much more back and forth, with the Galaxy holding off a few scoring chances by New Egypt. The Galaxy have yet to give up a goal this season.  This weekend the Galaxy head to Maryland for the prestigious Baltimore March Madness tournament.

The EBSC Gladiators (U9B) traveled this past weekend to Clark, where they fared poorly last Fall, and shut down the home side for a convincing 2-0 win. The first half saw the Gladiators keep most of the play in the offensive half of the field, with the Clark Lightning limited to attempting break-aways on long balls, all of which were well-cleared by the aggressive play of the Gladiators’ keeper. Only in the final minutes did Clark maintain any possession near the Gladiators’ goal, but the teams went in to the half scoreless. The second half saw East Brunswick gather the rewards of their efforts, when a scramble in the goal mouth that could have seen any of a handful of Gladiators score was finally touched into the back of the net. Energized by the 1-0 lead, East Brunswick increased the pressure and increased their lead on a wonderful strike from about 16 years out on the right, which whistled past the Clark keeper. The Gladiators continued to dominate the game, and came close to scoring again on several occasions, all the while maintaining a well-organized and aggressive defense that limited Clark to one shot on goal the entire game.
The EBSC Spirit (U12G) opened up their JAGS season with two victories this past weekend.  On Saturday afternoon, despite high winds at Heavenly Farms, The Spirit defeated the DSC Dragons by a score of 3-0. Keeper Shannan McCarthy made several outstanding saves coming off her line in one-on-one situations to stop the attack and secure the shutout. The Spirit used the wind to their advantage in the first half with Gab Sachs converting on a PK about 5 minutes into the match. Katherine McCulley scored from about 18 yards out off a brilliant pass from Julia Simoes to put the Spirit on top 2-0 at halftime. In the second half, with the wind in their faces, the girls played an outstanding possession game, keeping the ball on the ground and maintaining their shape throughout.  Coming from the center back position Sydney Rosa buried a shot from 18 yards out 20 minutes through the second half to ice the victory for the Spirit. The next day, the Spirit traveled to Roxbury to take on the Extreme and came away with a thrilling 3-2 victory. The girls matched Roxbury goal for goal in the first half and were tied 2-2 at half time, thanks to two brilliant strikes by Stephanie Schwailik and Gab Sachs. In the second half, The Spirit backs Emma Feeney, Goldy Ianosi, Emily Chimento, Alex Kalafor, Margeret Lee, Kaitlyn Roughan and Julia Simoes withstood a furious Roxbury attack. Midway through the half Sydney Rosa exploded through the Roxbury back line and beat the goalkeeper for the deciding goal. Shannon McCarthy was spectacular in goal with at least a dozen saves.

The EBSC Galaxy (U13B) played back-to-back draws over the past two weekends. The Galaxy traveled to Maryland for the MSI March Madness tournament and came away with a 0-0 draw against FC Frederick, the No. 8-ranked team in Maryland. After a slow start, the Galaxy gained confidence and controlled possession and field position the entire second half but were unable to get one in the net. Unfortunately, the boys’s remaining games were cancelled due to rain.  This past weekend, the Galaxy traveled to face New Jersey’s No. 10-ranked team, the Highland Jaguars, a team that had beaten them the last two times. This time, though, the Galaxy came out strong and, with a very strong wind helping, controlled the first half but were unable to score. The Galaxy grabbed a quick goal off a multi- pass combo in the second half to take a 1-0 lead. But Highland was energized by the goal and evened the score just minutes later. The Galaxy were forced to play defensively for the rest of the half, fighting hard to hold off a few scoring chances by the Jaguars to end it 1-1. This was the first goal conceded by the Galaxy in two scrimmages and five games this season.

Week Ending 03/15/09

The EBSC Galaxy (U13B) faced the Lumberton Blaze for the first time ever and sent a strong message, winning 3-0 with a solid offensive and defensive effort.    The Galaxy took control early and kept pressure on Lumberton throughout the first half, outshooting their opponents, 17-3, and turning a nice multi-pass combo into a close-range goal for a 1-0 halftime lead. The second half was equally lopsided, and the Galaxy grabbed a quick goal and then one more midway through the half. The Galaxy held Lumberton without a shot in the second half in recording their second straight clean sheet.

The EBSC Gladiators (U9B) played home and away this Mother’s Day weekend, facing the Millburn Braves on Saturday and then traveling to Branchburg to face the Blast on Sunday.  Both matches started out slowly, with the Gladiators conceding a goal around the 10 minute mark.   Yet each time, the team kept their heads up and took the game to their opponents, creating numerous scoring chances and smothering their opponents on defense.  The final scores were 2-1 over Millburn and 3-1 over Branchburg, with five different Gladiators tallying goals.    These two wins meant that the Gladiators finished 3-0 against opponents that stayed with them in Flight 3 from last season.

Over in Recreation, in the boys’ U13 division, Team Australia represented EBSC in great style, coming from behind to defeat Old Bridge, 2-1, to claim the 3M League (Monmouth-Middlesex-Mercer Recreation)  championship. The two teams also demonstrated their sportsmanship when, midway through the first half, an Old Bridge player was injured and an EB player intentionally kicked the ball out of bounds to allow the player to be attended to. Old Bridge then took the throw-in and, to show its appreciation for EBSC’s good sportsmanship, threw the ball right to an EBSC player so the game could continue. Team members include: Jason Gessner, Andrew Simpson, Samuel Frost, Ryan Lizotte, Jonathan Golin, Frank Bosworth, Mark Mevorah, Michael Sharobeem, Rikhil Patel, Kirolous Makrious, Eugene Sychevskiy, Cory Stabinsky, John Favate, Nicholas Favate, James Marple, Jonathan Feld and Eric Wolf ... Week Ending 11/23:

The EBSC Revolution (U9G) capped off a successful first season with a 1-0 win against Metuchen yesterday. The Revolution victory was made possible by a tough defense led by Lauren Krinsky in goal and Casey Caroselli, Ashley Desrosier and Gabby Brancato in the back. The team’s offensive trio of Callie Luftig, Kayla Kaplan and Victoria Gil kept pressure on Metuchen’s goal, while a strong midfield tracked back to aid in the defensive end against a tough Metuchen offense. Outstanding play in the midfield by Tori Constantin, Gina Morrison, Dayna Dobkowski, Jessica Kehoe, Lauren Krinsky and Meghan McSpiritt helped lead the Revolution to victory.

Week Ending 11/09:

The EBSC Gladiators (U9B) continued their run at being undefeated at home this season with two strong efforts this past weekend. In Saturday’s match, where the team’s dark green jerseys were quickly dark brown with mud, the Gladiators jumped out to a 2-0 lead by halftime against the Greater Flemington Wolverines, and the game seemed well in hand. However, defensive breakdowns against a furious assault by the Wolverines saw the score tied at 2-2 late in the game. Playing strong to the finish, though, the Gladiators’ left back made a strong run up the touch line, then cut into the box and slotted home past the keeper to cement the 3-2 win in the final seconds of the game. In Sunday’s match, the visiting Berkeley Heights Bobcats got an early gift when a tumble in the box sent a Gladiator onto the turf and onto the ball, where contact with an arm created a PK opportunity. Not letting their heads drop for a moment, the Gladiators came back and evened up the score a minute later. The rest of the game saw both teams battling to secure the game-winning second goal, but neither team could manage it, and the final whistle ended a hard-fought 1-1 draw.

A team of EBSC coaches won the championship in the fourth annual Coaches Tournament at Soccer Centers in Somerset last Saturday evening. The EBSC team swept through its four games before meeting Scotch Plains, last year’s champion, in the final. With the score tied 0-0 at the end of regulation, the game went into penalty kicks, and EBSC won on the sixth round.

Week Ending 10/19:

EBSC United (U11B) played their home opener this past Sunday and came up with their finest performance to date, beating a strong Watchung Hills team, 2-0. Forwards Matt Ross, Phil Ogalo and Drew Walcott found themselves with scoring opportunities several times in each half due to the hard work of midfield players Pat Hartman, Brendan Hills, Marco Loncar, Alex Mora, Mohamed Fquihi and Andrew Hoeni. In the meantime, the backline of Chris Cap, Philip Ripp, Ian Sawicki and Alec Hoeni, along with goalkeeper Luke Roche, denied the Tigers’ every attempt. The victory was the United’s fourth win of the season.

France (U12B Rec) had a great day at the Manalapan Fun Fest, winning two games to take home a first-place trophy. France scored an impressive 4-1 victory over a crafty East Windsor team and then squeezed by a strong Willingboro team, 1-0, to lock up the championship. All games were against MAPS teams with the Galaxy going 4-0. The first game was against a top ten ranked team from CT, Newtown Samba. After giving up an early goal, the Galaxy battled back, ending the first half 1-1 behind superb keeper play. Playing good team-play during the second half they were able to end the game 4-2 behind goals from 4 different players. The next game was against Hans Soliz Academy, and the Galaxy were able to pull off a 5-3 win in a scrappy, physical game. Sunday morning the Galaxy did enough to pull out a 2-0 win against Madison YMCA Avalanche, dodging a bullet in the form of two penalty kicks awarded to the Avalanche in the second half. The tournament final was against the other bracket winner, the Ironbound Vipers. The Galaxy controlled the match and posted a convincing 3-1 win. Ironbound could not develop any sustained offense, with their lone goal coming on a PK after a handball in the box late in the game.

The EBSC Blazers (U12B) enjoyed a very successful weekend. Playing 4 games against very good competition, they mananged a 3-0-1 record including winning First Place in the North Brunswick Spook-a-rama Tournament. The EBSC Mustangs (U13G) have qualified for the Sweet Sixteen in this year’s State Cup tournament. The Mustangs are coached by Herman DeLaHoz and Brad Caruso.

After having to cancel their home opener last weekend due to thunderstorm activity, EBSC United (U11B) took to the road once again on Sunday, this time heading to Washington’s Crossing State Park to challenge the Hopewell Valley Riptide. United came out strong in the first half and scored three goals. The Riptide tried to rally with a goal in the second half, but United’s defense was not about to concede any further ground. EBSC’s 3-1 victory was especially satisfying for the boys as the Riptide had managed a 3-2 come-from-behind upset the last time these teams met.

The EBSC Galaxy (U13 B) lost a tough 1-0 game in state cup play against Hillsboro Roma on Sunday at home. In spite of dominating time of possession they could not find the back of the net against a strong Hillsboro defense after giving up an early goal to go down 1-0. They will look to rebound in the Parsippany tournament next weekend.

Week Ending 09/28:

The EBSC Galaxy (U13B) has been plagued with injuries and illness this year and has not yet had their full squad together for a game, but they were still able to post two big wins this past weekend. In MAPS league play on Sunday, the boys traveled to Newark to face the Ironbound Vipers and won a hard-fought 2-1 game.

Dynamo Takes 1st Place in Piscataway Tourney
Tough weather conditions and injuries could not prevent the EBSC Dynamo (U12B) from playing its best soccer since last spring, rolling to a first-place finish in the Piscataway Tournament. The final scores were 6-0 in both games vs. Piscataway and Watchung Hills.

Playing with 12 boys and in mostly driving rain, the team exhibited superior ball movement and passing. With Chewy in goal and lockdown defense by John, Matt T, Brandon, Farrell and Flynn, the Dynamo held both opponents scoreless.
Henry had a remarkable 6 goals in total, 3 in each game. Other goals were scored by Amani, Jason, Sahil, Brandon and Pat, including a header by Pat and a free kicks by Henry and Jason. Assists were recorded by Stelly, Amani, Jason and Henry.

EBSC’s United FC (U11B) swept to the elite bracket championship at the 30th annual East Brunswick Soccer Club Labor Day Tournament.

United got off to a good start with a 3-0 win over the Middletown Coyotes in its first match.  The next match had all the elements for a tough challenge given that the United was playing the NJ state champs, Millburn Titans.  The game had great offensive and defensive plays from both teams early on, but Daniel Shaposhnikov broke the tension scoring twice to make it 2-0 before halftime. Millburn came back with great force and had a number of chances to score but the United defense, led by Ola-Ayo Ogunwale, Rob Duncan, Ryan Brede, Nas Zubairu and Jesse Perel, prevented any scoring.  Millburn’s best chance came when they were awarded a penalty kick, but United keeper Lucas Ribau made a stellar save which resulted in a counter attack with a long well measured pass by Kyle Santos to Ivan Loncar who beat Millburn’s defense to make it 3-0 and seal the win.  The United’s game was against Westfield Cyclones, who scored first but couldn’t stop Michael Pisco, who scored a hat trick thanks to a  tremendous support from midfielders Luca Biagiotti, Ryan McDonald and Ryan Fedosh.  Going into the final game against MAPS opponent NJ Rangers Chelsea, the United was prepared for a very difficult championship game. The United took the lead late in the first half on a goal by Kevin Escobar, thanks to a great assist by Ryan McDonald to make it 1-0 at the half.  As expected Chelsea put on the pressure but united FC responded with Kevin scoring again from a long pass to make it 2-0 twelve minutes into the second half.  From this point on it was all United FC, culminating in a number of beautiful plays and which resulted in a pass to Ivan Loncar, who put it past the goalie to make it 3-0 and set off a championship celebration.

EB Gladiators U11 Boys win Monroe Spring Kickoff 2011
In the first game against the Sayreville Eagles, the Gladiators came out fast and hard, scoring 2 quick goals by forwards Tyler Devaney and Chase Van Dusen. Dominating possession, they went into halftime with a 3-0 lead, after their center-mid Jagath Ranaweera scored a goal. In the second half, Tyler, playing center mid, scored on a header, giving the Gladiators a commanding 4-0 lead. Sayreville scored on a PK to make it 4-1 but the Gladiator mids and forwards kept possession of the ball on the opponent’s end of the pitch and closed out the game.

Next they faced the Livingston Locomotion, who had beaten them 4-1 in a regular season game in the fall. Once again the Gladiators came out strong and dominated possession. With suffocating defense from the back line of Bradley Susskind, Joe Sampson, Matt Riemann, Shane McMahon, Lucas Espada and keeper Ayyan Rahman and crisp passes and controlled possession from mids and forwards of Andrew Oross, Bobby McCulley, Zach Solomon, John Dallagnese, Chase Van Dusen, Anthony Kowal, Tyler DeVaney, Nick Riggio and Jagath Ranaweera, the Gladiators controlled the game. Nick Riggio scored a goal in the second half, putting EB up 1-0. The team was feeling confident, but with less than 5 minutes remaining in the game, Livingston scored a goal. The game ended in a 1-1 tie, forcing a PK shootout.

After Livingston’s first player scored, Matt Riemann tied it at 1 apiece. EB keeper, Ayyan stopped Livingston’s second player, but Tyler was stopped by their keeper as well. Livingston’s 3rd player missed the next kick as did Jagath for EB. Their 4th player made his chance putting them up 2-1. EB’s Ayyan then kicked before the referee blew his whistle. He missed the kick but the kick was disallowed. Luckily Ayyan knocked in his second attempt. That tied the score at 2-2. They went up 3-2 on their last kicker’s attempt. Down a goal with one kicker left, our last kicker John Dallagnese nailed the goal to tie it at 3 apiece, forcing a second round of PKs.

With every remaining kicker, the team huddled, arm over arm, supporting each other.  Livingston’s first kicker sent one right at EB’s keeper as did the Gladiator’s first kicker, Shane McMahon. Tension mounted.  Livingston’s second kicker missed wide and so did Nick Riggio. At this point, there had to be close to 100 people watching.  Livingston sent up their 3rd kicker who proceeded to kick right at EB’s keeper.  The Galdiator’s 3rd kicker, Anthony Kowal went up, slowly placed the ball down and waited for the whistle.  The whistle blew and he made his approach to the ball.  With head down and his right foot swinging through the ball, he hit it into the left corner capping the victory for East Brunswick.

Congratulations Gladiators!
